Make Cuban Pizza Recipe

  • Author: Ethan
  • Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Yield: 1 large pizza (4 servings) 1x

Description

Cuban pizza is a deliciously cheesy and thick-crusted variation of traditional pizza, popular in Havana and Miami. It features a soft yet crispy dough with generous amounts of mozzarella and gouda cheese, topped with classic ingredients like ham, chorizo, or pepperoni. Unlike Italian pizza, it is usually baked in a pan and served with a crispy, golden edge.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt

For the Toppings:

  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 ½ cups shredded gouda cheese
  • ½ cup cooked ham, chopped
  • ½ cup chorizo or pepperoni slices
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
    • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Knead until a soft dough forms.
    • Cover and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  2. Preheat Oven & Shape Dough:

    • Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
    • Punch down the dough and roll it into a thick round shape (about 10–12 inches).
    • Place it in a greased baking pan.
  3. Assemble the Pizza:

    • Spread pizza sauce evenly over the dough.
    • Sprinkle a mix of mozzarella and gouda cheese generously.
    • Add ham, chorizo, or pepperoni on top.
  4. Bake:

    • Bake for 15–20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
    • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
  5. Serve & Enjoy:

    • Cut into squares or wedges and enjoy hot!

Notes

  • Cuban pizza is often served with a side of ketchup or hot sauce for extra flavor.
  • You can customize toppings with green peppers, onions, or olives.
  • If you prefer a crispier crust, pre-bake the dough for 5 minutes before adding toppings.
